Finding Their Voice
Individualized learning in Writer's Workshop
Individualized learning isn’t just a strategy at WHPS—it’s the heart of our teaching. In Writer's Workshop, students develop essential skills while discovering and refining their unique voices and perspectives. Through this process, they master techniques that make them persuasive communicators, compelling storytellers, and thoughtful researchers.
5 Ways We Bring This Philosophy to Life
-
Each unit begins with an “on-demand” writing prompt, which teachers analyze to identify strengths and growth areas. Lessons, small group instruction, and one-on-one support are tailored to meet each child’s needs.
Fun Fact: WHPS is exploring AI tools to streamline writing analysis, giving teachers more time for personalized instruction.
-
Teachers use developmental Writing Continua to to assess students’ skills and guide them to the next level. These progressions ensure that every student, whether on grade level or far ahead, is continuously challenged and supported.
The learning progressions also help students and teachers pinpoint strengths and areas for growth across key writing elements such as spelling, punctuation, elaboration, transitions, author’s craft, story leads, text features, and more.
Fun Fact: Progressions explicitly clarify grade-level expectations and next steps, enabling us to set individualized goals for every student—even those working far above grade level.
-
Students maintain personalized journals that serve as living archives of lessons, strategies, and tips. These notebooks empower them to track progress and revisit tools for future writing projects.
-
By analyzing high-quality literature, students discover how professional authors craft vivid descriptions, dialogue, and sensory details. They don’t just imitate these techniques—they learn how to adapt and apply them to different types of writing, from creative stories to persuasive essays and even formal reports. This fosters a deeper understanding of how writing strategies transfer across genres and formats and to students’ lives now and in the future.
Fun Fact: Mentor texts show students how real authors use punctuation, transitions, and dialogue, helping them apply professional techniques to their own work.
-
At the end of each unit, students refine one piece through the entire writing process, sharing their accomplishments in celebrations that showcase the specific skills they’ve developed, along with their creativity and growth.
-
Each unit concludes with an “Off-Demand” writing sample, completed during a brief class period, typically after the publishing celebration. This provides valuable insight into how well students can independently apply the lessons and strategies they’ve learned throughout the unit.
Families especially enjoy seeing their child’s published work, as it highlights growth and development. It’s equally rewarding for families to see this progress reflected on developmental learning progressions, showing the strides their child has made in their writing journey.
While our school uses traditional assessments, like Off-Demands, at the end of a unit or before moving on to a new topic, this article focuses on formative assessments because they are so integral to personalizing learning and are often less familiar to parents.
This personalized approach ensures that every child is supported, challenged, and inspired to grow as a writer and communicator for life.
